Why Artist Development Still Matters in the Streaming Era

By Prime Example Records

The prevailing wisdom in the streaming era seems to be: release often, release fast, and let the algorithm decide what wins. It is a strategy that works for attention. But attention without a foundation is a house of cards.

Artist development is the unfashionable, slow, unglamorous work of helping a person become the fullest version of their creative identity. It means sitting with an artist and asking hard questions about who they are, what they want to say, and what they want their legacy to look like in 20 years. It means sometimes telling an artist their best idea is not ready yet.

It means choosing depth over velocity.

At Prime Example Records, we have made artist development the centre of everything we do. That is why we do not sign 40 artists. We sign artists we believe in completely, and we work with them to build something that lasts.

The streaming era did not make artist development irrelevant. It made it more necessary. Because now that everyone can release, the artists who have something real to say and the platform to say it well are the ones who will matter long after the trend cycle has moved on.

That is the bet we are making. And we are not hedging it.
