The State of Independent Labels in Canada: Where Do We Go From Here?

By Prime Example Records

The narrative around Canadian music has always centred on the talent: Drake, The Weeknd, Jessie Reyez, and dozens more who have reshaped global pop culture. But behind every successful artist is a system. And for years, Canadian artists had to either build that system themselves or cede control to American or European label structures that did not always understand or respect the Canadian market.

That is changing.

The past five years have seen a significant uptick in serious, well-capitalized independent label ecosystem in Canada. FACTOR grants, increased streaming payouts, and a generation of music professionals who have worked inside major label systems and returned with the knowledge to build better alternatives have all contributed to a healthier ecosystem.

At Prime Example Records, we have been watching this evolution closely and contributing to it. Our model, which prioritizes artist development, artist management, and long-term brand building over quick-hit single strategies, is one example of how independent labels can compete at the highest level.

But there is more work to do. Distribution deals, sync licensing, brand partnerships, and touring all need investment and expertise. Canadian artists deserve domestic support that can compete globally. We are committed to being part of that solution.
